The first appointment is a conversation, not a treatment. Nothing is decided on the phone, nothing is agreed from a photograph, and no pigment goes anywhere near you until you have sat down with Alison and talked it through properly.

What the consultation actually involves

It takes about half an hour and it covers five things:

• What you actually want. Bring photographs of brows or lips you like — and, more usefully, any you do not. What you dislike tells Alison more than what you like.
• Your face, not a template. Shape is mapped to your own bone structure and to the brow hair you already have, not to a trend.
• Colour, in daylight. Matched against your skin, your natural hair and your undertone. Bring the lipstick you reach for most if lips are what you are thinking about.
• Your health. Medication, skin conditions, previous work, pregnancy, anything that heals slowly. Some of it means waiting, some of it means a note from your GP, and a little of it means the treatment is not for you. Better to know now.
• Your patch test. Done at the same visit so you do not make two journeys. It takes a minute.

What it costs, and what you commit to

The consultation is free and you can walk away from it. There is no deposit taken on the day, no price agreed before you have been seen, and no pressure to book anything at the end of it. Plenty of people go away and think about it for a few weeks, which is exactly the right thing to do with a treatment you keep for a year or more.

If you do want to go ahead, a deposit secures your appointment and comes off the total. Everything else is paid on the day.

How soon can you be seen

Consultations are usually available within a week or two. The treatment itself is booked around the salon's hair and beauty diary, because semi-permanent appointments run to two hours or more and cannot be squeezed between other clients.

If you have a date in the diary — a wedding, a holiday, a big birthday — say so when you get in touch. Work back at least ten weeks from it, because the perfecting session sits four to six weeks after the first appointment and you want both healed before the day.
